Looking to track your vehicle without any GPS vehicle tracker, that costs an arm and a leg?
Connecting your precious wheels to big brother in the sky is much easier and cheaper than you might of imagined.
Radio Triangulation can set you back hundreds if not thousands of dollars and that is not counting the installation, activation or monthly fees incurred for whichever tracking service you might use! For a normal Joe like us, we just cannot afford such luxuries.
The good news is it doesn’t have to. If you have a GPS activated phone about the house, you can set up your own tracking system for next to nothing!
- Here is how to do it
If you already have a old phone with a GPS tracking system then great, if not, you will need to go out and purchase one. You will be able to pick one up for around 30 bucks, so no need to panic.
Once you have the device, make sure you switch on the internet access, otherwise your mobile device will not be able transmit any data. Once you have enabled the connection, switch the volume to zero and mute all the keypad buttons. Why alert the joyriders that stole your car that you are tracking them?
Next step is which mapping/tracking service are you going to opt for? There are plenty on the markets but we suggest using a service like InstaMapper as it is free! Once you have installed it, download this tool and then get this .zip file as it is extremely easy to use.
Once you you everything on your device, launch it. It should be located in the “Java Apps” section of the phone and the app is called “GPS Tracker”. Then enter the device identification you received from your InstaMapper account and make you save the information. The Mobile device will then ask your permission to use the GPS Chip. Obviously select “yes” and the status should change from “Locating” to “Tracking” once you see this actioned, you are all set and ready! You will see the location of your mobile on the InstaMapper website.
- The Difficult part
The most difficult step is the final step. If you want real 24/7 tracking of your vehicle, you will need to hopwire the mobile to your car battery to ensure the phone doesn’t run out of juice.
If you are not car savvy, then maybe the best idea would be to find someone that is to do this for you.
If you are the man or lady for the job, then you will want to purchase a phone charger, obviously that can connect to your device.
Once you have it, connect it to the car's 12v accessory outlet. The aim is to find the 12V car circuit that isn’t always switched on.
If you connect it to a circuit that never powers off, then you could drain the battery when the car is not in use for a long period of time. We would advise using the light in the glovebox, as whenever your car starts, it will automatically power up the phone!
Now you have everything setup, just visit the InstaMapper site and track all you like!
